Venue is commended for its waste management in the UFI Global Sustainable Development Award.
Known as the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, UFI’s activities stretch over 82 countries and regions around the world to represent, promote and support the industry.
This year, its Global Sustainable Development Award focused on ‘waste management’, a subject that Olympia London has been addressing for over a decade by sending zero waste to landfill. The home of inspirational events attracted the judges’ attention with a string of successful initiatives, placing the venue among the top event businesses in the world to be commended; and the only one representing the UK.
Olympia London is considered a sustainability leader within the UK events industry, even sharing its expertise with fellow venues. Adding to its long-standing commitment to green practices, in 2019 the venue turned its attention to eliminating food waste – a campaign which resulted in 17% reduction within three months of implementation.
Driving this success is Olympia London’s ‘Grand Plan’: a staff-led, grass-roots initiative committed to the sustainability of the business by advocating green practices, connecting communities and empowering staff, service partners and event industry peers. Commenting on the achievement, ‘Grand Planner’ and Head of Sustainability Siân Richards, said: “We are delighted to have been commended by the judges for our waste management programme. We are proud of our longstanding zero to landfill policy and recycling rate of over 98%. This global recognition for best practice in waste management encourages us in our determination to improve even further, in collaboration with event organisers, contractors and our service partners.”
